Tommy James & The Shondells are an American rock band that achieved considerable fame during the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. The group was formed in Niles, Michigan, in 1960, originally known as Tom and the Tornadoes, with Tom James (born Thomas Gregory Jackson) as the lead singer. They rose to prominence with their hit "Hanky Panky" in 1966, which became a No. 1 single in the United States. Following the success of "Hanky Panky," the band was restructured, and Tommy James re-emerged with a new lineup as Tommy James & The Shondells.
The band became known for their ability to blend pop-rock with splashes of psychedelia, creating enduring hits that still resonate with audiences today. Among their most memorable songs are the psychedelic "Crimson & Clover," which they released in late 1968 to critical acclaim, and the infectious "Mony Mony," which became an anthem of sorts for youthful exuberance. Other notable tracks include "I Think We're Alone Now," later famously covered by Tiffany in the 1980s, "Crystal Blue Persuasion," and "Gettin' Together." Over the years, their music has been covered and sampled by countless artists, a testament to their influence and staying power. The re-issue of their complete recordings from their peak period, "Celebration: The Complete Roulette Recordings 1966-1973," cements their legacy as an essential piece of American pop-rock history.
