Nicola Rossi-Lemeni

Nicola Rossi-Lemeni (1920-1991) was a distinguished bass opera singer known for his rich, deep voice and dramatic intensity. Born in Istanbul to Italian and Russian parents, he carved out a significant place for himself on the international opera stage. Rossi-Lemeni trained in Milan and made his professional debut in 1946 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, quickly establishing his reputation as a gifted singer adept in both bel canto and more demanding dramatic roles.

Over the years, Rossi-Lemeni's versatility allowed him to excel in a wide range of operatic styles and languages. He became particularly celebrated for his commanding portrayals in the works of Rossini, as indicated in recordings such as "Il turco in Italia" and "Il barbiere di Siviglia." His interpretations of Verdi and Donizetti were notable as well, with performances in "Ernani" and "Anna Bolena" among his most acclaimed. He also ventured into the Russian repertory, with Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" being a hallmark of his career. One of his greatest achievements was his ability to bring the same level of depth and character to both live performances and recordings, as evidenced by the posthumous release "Lebendige Vergangenheit - Nicola Rossi-Lemeni," which captured the essence of his artistry for future generations to appreciate. His contribution to the field of opera remains significant, and his recordings continue to be cherished by aficionados and newcomers alike.
