Handsome Furs was an indie rock duo formed in 2005 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, by husband and wife Dan Boeckner, of Wolf Parade and Operators fame, and writer Alexei Perry. The pair combined their creative energies to give life to a project that was distinctive for its use of minimalistic drum machines and synthesizers paired with Boeckner's emotive voice and guitar work. Their musical journey began with the release of "Plague Park" in 2007, an album that reflected a stark, enveloping sound, exploring themes of urban life and isolation.
Over the next few years, Handsome Furs expanded their sound into more rhythmically intense territories. "Face Control" (2009) took inspiration from Eastern European music and culture, integrating these with their signature electronic melodies and beats, all while critiquing aspects of contemporary society. With their 2011 release, "Sound Kapital," they delved even deeper into synthesizer-driven compositions. The album was conceived entirely on keyboards, representing a sonic evolution from their guitar-heavy beginnings and highlighting issues such as life in oppressive political climates. Despite critical acclaim and a growing fan base, Handsome Furs announced their disbandment in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of thought-provoking indie rock that pushed against the limits of their genre.
