Girl in a Coma is an indie rock band from San Antonio, Texas whose music is a blend of punk, pop, and rockabilly influences. Formed in 2001, the band consists of Mexican-American sisters Nina Diaz (lead vocals, guitar) and Phanie Diaz (drums) alongside their long-time friend Jenn Alva (bass). Nina was only 13 years old when the group was founded, and her powerful vocal delivery quickly became a defining characteristic of the band's sound. They derived their name from the iconic song "Girlfriend in a Coma" by The Smiths, reflecting the group's admiration for the influential British band.
The band's debut album, "Both Before I'm Gone," was released in 2007 to critical acclaim, garnering attention for its raw energy and emotional depth. Following the success of their debut, they continued to build their reputation with subsequent releases including "Trio BC" in 2009 and "Adventures in Coverland" in 2010, the latter being a series of 7-inch singles featuring covers of songs by artists ranging from Selena to Joy Division. Their latest offering, "Exits and All The Rest," came out in 2011, showcasing a matured sound and cementing the group's place in the indie rock landscape. Known for their engaging live performances and dedication to their roots, Girl in a Coma has earned a loyal fanbase and has been recognized for contributing a distinct voice to the indie genre.
