Stephen Stubbs

Stephen Stubbs is a Grammy Award-winning lutenist, conductor, and a prominent figure in the world of early music. Originally from Seattle, he spent much of his early career in Europe, where he gained recognition for his deep understanding and expressive performances of Baroque and Renaissance repertoire. Stubbs is a co-founder of the early music ensemble Tragicomedia and has collaborated with numerous respected groups and soloists in bringing historical performance practices to modern audiences.

In addition to performing, Stubbs is a respected educator and artistic leader. He is a founding artistic co-director of the American early music ensemble Pacific MusicWorks, and he has conducted acclaimed productions of works by composers like Monteverdi, Handel, and Purcell. His passion for vocal music and opera is evident in his recordings and live performances, which often revive lesser-known Baroque operas with authenticity and vitality.
