Willie "The Lion" Smith

Willie "The Lion" Smith (1897–1973) was not a saxophonist, but one of the masters of the stride piano tradition that thrived during the 1920s and 1930s. His nickname "The Lion" aptly reflected his ferociously spirited style and his commanding presence on the keys. Born in Goshen, New York, Smith developed a love for music at an early age and his career blossomed in Harlem, where he became an integral figure in the development of the jazz piano style known as stride.

Smith's music was characterized by a strong left-hand technique and a flamboyantly rhythmic right hand. He was also known as a composer, with "Finger Buster" and "Echoes of Spring" among his notable works. The Lion's roster of influence and collaborators is a who's who of jazz legends, including Duke Ellington, who cited Smith as an influence. Beyond his powerful performances and recordings, Smith was known for his gregarious nature and his propensity to sport a trademark cigar. His ebullient personality is perhaps best captured in his memoir, "Music on My Mind," which chronicles his life and the effervescent world of jazz in which he reigned. Although Smith's discography mistakenly includes releases such as "Willie Smith: Alto Sax All-Time Great," it's important to note that these may refer to different artists with similar names or might be misattributions, as Smith's true virtuosity was demonstrated on the piano rather than the saxophone.
