Thomas Stoltzer

Thomas Stoltzer was a German composer active during the early 16th century, known for his sacred music. Born around 1480, he served as a priest and eventually became court composer to the Hungarian King, Louis II. Stoltzer's music stands out for its intricate polyphony and expressive use of text, marking him as an important figure in the transition between late medieval and early Renaissance music. Sadly, his life was cut short around 1526, possibly during the turmoil surrounding the Battle of Mohács. Despite his relatively short career, Stoltzer's works, including masses, motets, and psalm settings, have endured and are appreciated today for their blend of structured counterpoint and emotional depth.
