Reinbert de Leeuw was an eminent Dutch pianist, conductor, and composer, renowned particularly for his interpretations of modern and contemporary classical music. Born on September 8, 1938, in Amsterdam, de Leeuw embarked on a career dedicated to the performance and championing of 20th-century classical compositions. As a pianist, he was known for his penetrating insights into the works of Satie, Liszt, and their contemporaries, while his conductorship was frequently associated with the works of modernist composers such as György Kurtág and György Ligeti.
De Leeuw's dedication to contemporary music extended to forming the Ensemble Schönberg, which he founded to perform music of the Second Viennese School, and later music by successive generations of composers. His extensive discography shows a deep engagement with the music of his time, as reflected in releases such as the critically acclaimed "György Kurtág: Complete Works For Ensemble And Choir," and interpretations of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde," arranged for small orchestra. Reinbert de Leeuw passed away on February 14, 2020, but left a lasting legacy through his contributions to the performance and understanding of modern classical music.
