The Colourfield were a British pop band formed in the early 1980s by singer and songwriter Terry Hall after the breakup of his previous group, Fun Boy Three (and following his earlier stint in The Specials). Active primarily from 1983 to 1987, the band leaned into a more sophisticated, orchestral-tinged pop sound that set them apart from Hall’s ska and new wave roots.
They’re best known for songs like “The Colour Field,” “Thinking of You,” and “The Ghost in You,” and for the album *Virgins and Philistines* (1985). While their time together was relatively short, The Colourfield left a distinct, elegant little footprint in UK 80s pop—smart songwriting, big melodic hooks, and Hall’s unmistakable voice at the center of it all.
