Carlos Hayre

Carlos Hayre was a renowned Peruvian composer and virtuosic guitarist, born on June 29, 1932, in Barranco. He began his career in the early 1960s and was known for his innovative approach to Peruvian music, particularly in the criollo genre. Hayre introduced modern harmonies and instruments like the cajón into traditional vals, significantly impacting the style's evolution. He collaborated with prominent figures such as Alicia Maguiña, with whom he was married for 25 years, and Nicomedes Santa Cruz. Hayre's work spanned multiple genres, including criollo and Afro-Peruvian music, and he recorded over 80 albums with major Latin American artists. He passed away on July 19, 2012.

Outside of his work as a composer and guitarist, Hayre also played a role in the Peruvian Chicha band Compay Quinto as a bassist. However, his most notable contributions remain in the realm of criollo and Afro-Peruvian music, where he is celebrated for his contributions to modernizing traditional styles.
