Inge Borkh

Inge Borkh was a powerhouse German soprano who electrified opera stages in the mid-20th century with her blazing dramatic voice and intense acting chops. Born in 1921, she started her career as an actress before switching to singing, bringing theatrical fire to roles like Salome and Elektra in Richard Strauss’s operas – performances that became her signature. Her voice had a laser-like intensity perfect for these complex, psychologically charged characters, and she became a sought-after name at major European houses like La Scala and the Vienna State Opera.

Borkh’s legacy lives on through iconic recordings, including her hair-raising 1955 *Turandot* as the icy princess (a role she reportedly hated singing!). Though she retired from the stage in the early ’70s, her recordings of Strauss and Wagner still give listeners chills today. Nicknamed "the singing volcano" for her explosive stage presence, Borkh remains a gold standard for dramatic sopranos who aren’t afraid to fully *become* their characters.
