George Telek, commonly known simply as Telek, is a renowned musician from Papua New Guinea. Born in 1959 in Barovon village near Kokopo, East New Britain Province, he has gained international recognition. Telek sings in his native languages, Kuanua and Tok Pisin, often incorporating traditional three-part harmonies characteristic of the Tolai people. He began his career with the contemporary Tolai group Painim Wok and later collaborated with David Bridie on the album *Tabaran* (1990). Telek won an ARIA Award for Best World Music Album with his debut solo album *Telek* in 1997. He was awarded an MBE for his contributions to Papua New Guinea music in 2000. His subsequent albums, such as *Serious Tam* (2000) and *Akave* (2010), have been widely acclaimed, showcasing his unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles.
Telek's music often blends Melanesian rhythms with contemporary grooves, enriched by island harmonies. His recent album *Kambek (I Lilikun Mulai)*, released in 2022, reflects his continued commitment to using music as a powerful tool for social advocacy. Despite facing health challenges, including a battle with mouth cancer, Telek remains a major figure in the Pacific music scene, celebrated for his haunting voice and diverse musical collaborations. His songs frequently touch on themes important to his community, such as domestic violence and the importance of traditional land.
