Jehan Alain was a French composer and organist best known for his innovative and expressive organ music. Born in 1911 into a musical family—his father was an organ builder and composer—Alain showed early talent and went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire. Though his life was tragically cut short in 1940 during World War II, his compositions left a lasting legacy in the world of organ music.
Alain’s works often blend elements of impressionism with rhythmic vitality and a distinct personal voice. Some of his most celebrated pieces include “Litanies,” “Le jardin suspendu,” and the “Trois Danses.” His music continues to inspire organists and modern listeners alike with its color, complexity, and emotional depth. His sister, the renowned organist Marie-Claire Alain, played a key role in preserving and promoting his music.
