Marcello Fantoni is an accomplished classical guitarist who graduated with distinction and cum laude from the Conservatory "G. Verdi" of Milan in 1996. Known for his deep exploration into the guitar repertoire, Fantoni has focused on rediscovering and recording lesser-known works for solo guitar and chamber music, often bringing world premiere recordings to the public. His work includes significant recordings of composers like Ferdinando Carulli, Luigi Legnani, Federico Moretti, and Niccolò Paganini, showcasing his dedication to both performance and musicological research. In 2022, his album "Carulli Rediscovered," which features pieces played on a historic 1820 René Lacôte guitar, earned him the prestigious Chitarra d'Oro Prize for Best Solo Guitar CD, highlighting the philological importance of his work in classical guitar.
Fantoni began studying classical guitar at the age of eight and was trained by Lena Kokkaliari and Paolo Paolini at the Milan Conservatory. His collaborations with musicologist Danilo Prefumo have further enriched his recordings, emphasizing their historical and artistic significance. His discography includes albums released by respected labels such as Naxos, Dynamic, and Stradivarius. Fantoni's performances are noted for their energy, clarity, and authenticity, breathing new life into early guitar music and bringing attention to overlooked composers and compositions from the classical guitar canon.
