Maisha

Maisha is a London-based jazz collective that has been a dynamic presence in the jazz scene since their formation. The group is known for its exploration of spiritual jazz, embracing the cosmic and meditative aspects of the genre and channeling the influences of trailblazers such as Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. Led by drummer Jake Long, Maisha's lineup represents a wealth of talent, typically featuring a rich tapestry of instruments including saxophone, trombone, guitar, and keys, as well as a commanding rhythm section that articulates the band's distinctive sound.

With their 2021 release "Open the Gates," Maisha continued to expand their sonic palette, delivering a vibrant tapestry of sound that resonates with energy and improvisation. Following their 2020 "Night Dreamer Direct-To-Disc Sessions," which captured the immediacy and dynamism of their live performances through a direct-to-disc recording process, the band further cemented their reputation as a vital force in contemporary jazz. Their 2018 album "There Is a Place" was a soul-stirring journey through layered rhythms and melodies, establishing the group as standard-bearers of the modern spiritual jazz movement. Earlier on, their debut "Welcome to a New Welcome" offered a first glimpse into Maisha's world, a promise of the innovative jazz expressions to come from this ensemble. The band's powerful fusion of Afrobeat influences, spiritual and modal jazz, alongside a conscious connection to global roots, has made them a prominent group among new British jazz contemporaries that shape the future landscape of the genre.
