Mike Nock

Mike Nock, born September 27, 1940, in Christchurch, New Zealand, is an esteemed jazz pianist, composer, and educator whose illustrious career spans over six decades. A true pilgrim of the keys, Nock's musical journey began in his homeland but soon extended overseas, particularly to the vibrant jazz scenes in Australia and the United States. After initial success in his native New Zealand, Nock moved to Australia where he began to establish his name, later venturing to the USA in the early 1960s. He made significant inroads into the jazz circles of New York City, performing and recording with a myriad of legendary artists, which helped to cement his reputation as a dedicated and innovative artist.

Nock's creativity and skill are showcased across a prolific discography, as exemplified by his recent offerings such as "Hearing" and "Journey Through An Imaginary Landscape," which highlight his command over the piano as well as his expansive compositional range. His music, often a blend of richly textured improvisations and complex melodic structures, defies easy categorization, underpinned by a nuanced understanding of various jazz styles, classical influences, and a keen sense of modernism. Albums like "Ondas" and "Piano Solos" capture his solo artistry, while collaborative works such as "Kindred" with saxophonist Roger Manins and "Vicissitudes" with the Mike Nock Trio demonstrate a deep connection with fellow musicians. Recognized for his contributions to music, Mike Nock has received numerous awards and honors, and he continues to inspire through both his performances and his role as an educator.
