Golden Smog

Golden Smog is an American alternative rock/country rock supergroup with an evolving line-up of musicians from prominent bands. With roots dating back to 1989, the collective initially formed from Minneapolis area bands such as Soul Asylum, The Replacements, and Jayhawks with a playful approach, using pseudonyms for their early live gigs. The group took its moniker as a playful spin on a nickname ("The Golden Fog") given to a heavy drinking duo consisting of Michael Nesmith of The Monkees and Jan Berry of Jan and Dean.

The band's early releases, like the "On Golden Smog" EP, revealed a predilection for covers, but with 1995's "Down By The Old Mainstream," they began crafting their own material, showcasing their members’ shared knack for heartfelt songwriting and Americana-infused melodies. Over the years, Golden Smog’s line-up has changed, but core contributors—Gary Louris of The Jayhawks, Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum, and Marc Perlman of The Jayhawks, among others—have remained instrumental to their sound. With albums like "Weird Tales" (1998) and "Another Fine Day" (2006), the group has solidified their reputation as enduring figures in the alternative music landscape, skillfully bridging the gap between their respective primary projects and this collaborative side venture. Their 2007 release, "Blood On The Slacks," continues to bear the imprint of their distinctive blend of rock and country influences, which has garnered them a devoted fan base.
