Ambar Gurung was a celebrated Nepali composer, singer, and lyricist, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nepal's music scene. Born in 1938 in Darjeeling, India, he played a central role in shaping modern Nepali music, blending traditional melodies with contemporary styles. Over his career, Gurung composed hundreds of songs, many of which became iconic for their poetic lyrics and emotional depth. He's perhaps best known for composing Nepal's national anthem, "Sayaun Thunga Phoolka," after the monarchy was abolished in 2006.
Gurung also contributed significantly to the Nepali literary and musical worlds through works like the musical adaptation of "Muna Madan" and many other beloved compositions. He served as the founding Chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama and mentored a generation of Nepali musicians. His legacy continues to inspire artists and music lovers across Nepal and the Nepali diaspora.
