The Countrymen

The Countrymen are a Cornish folk rock harmony group known for their tight four-part vocal harmonies and a relaxed, light-hearted stage presence. The band was formed somewhat accidentally during Open Mic Nights at The Countryman Inn near Launceston, Cornwall, which also inspired their name. Comprised of five seasoned musicians, including a "token Cornishman," they focus on songs that celebrate Cornwall’s history and culture. Their repertoire blends traditional and contemporary Cornish music, original compositions, and the occasional pop cover, all reflecting a deep passion for their county. They have performed at various notable festivals such as the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival and the Bridport Folk Festival, and even made it to the live heats for Glastonbury’s Pilton Stage. The Countrymen have released multiple recordings, including the albums *Trees on the Hill* and *The River Rolls On*, as well as a series of EPs titled *Cornish Lads* volumes 1 to 3.

The band members include Paul Callow, a founder who plays acoustic guitar and provides powerful vocals, Steve Cooksey, the musical director responsible for harmonies and production with a background in sound engineering and choir singing, and Steve Gilbert who handles lead and harmony vocals along with MC duties. The late Alan "Brin" Brinicombe was an original lead guitarist and a key figure until his passing in 2019. The Countrymen continue to tour and record, maintaining a strong presence in the Cornish folk music scene.
