Yevgeny Nesterenko

Yevgeny Nesterenko (1938–2021) was a legendary Russian bass opera singer celebrated for his commanding voice and dramatic intensity, particularly in Slavic repertoire. A star of the Bolshoi Theatre for decades, he became synonymous with iconic Russian roles like Boris Godunov, Ivan Susanin in *A Life for the Tsar*, and the title character in *Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina*. His rich, resonant tone and nuanced acting made him a pillar of operas by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov, many of which feature in his discography. Beyond the stage, Nesterenko was a respected vocal teacher and later served as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. His recordings of *Russian Songs and Romances* and live performances like Dvořák’s *Rusalka* showcase his versatility, blending folk warmth with operatic grandeur. Honored as a People’s Artist of the USSR, he left an enduring legacy as one of the 20th century’s finest interpreters of Russian classical music.
