Arthur Schwartz was a prolific American composer best known for his work on Broadway and in Hollywood during the mid-20th century. Born in 1900, Schwartz originally pursued a career in law before turning to music, eventually teaming up with lyricist Howard Dietz to create a string of hit musicals and popular songs. Together, they penned enduring classics like “Dancing in the Dark,” “That’s Entertainment!,” and “I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan,” helping to define the sound of the era.
While he may not be as widely recognized today as some of his contemporaries, Schwartz was a sophisticated and tuneful composer whose melodies became mainstays in the Great American Songbook. His work was featured in both musical theater productions and Hollywood films, and his collaborations with Dietz brought a witty, urbane sensibility to the stage. One of his notable later projects includes music for the Broadway adaptation of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
