Sam Rivers was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He was a major figure in the avant-garde jazz movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and his music was characterized by its experimental and improvisational nature. Rivers was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, in 1923, and he began playing the saxophone at an early age. He studied music at the University of Oklahoma and the Juilliard School, and he played with a variety of jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. In the 1960s, Rivers began to develop his own unique style of jazz, which was influenced by African and Caribbean music. He formed his own group, the Sam Rivers Trio, and he recorded a number of albums, including "Fuchsia Swing Song" (1964) and "Dimensions & Extensions" (1966). Rivers continued to perform and record throughout his career, and he died in 2011 at the age of 88.
