Rare Bird was a British progressive rock band formed in the late 1960s, known for their unique sound featuring two keyboard players and no guitarist. The band consisted of Graham Field on organ, Dave Kaffinetti on keyboards, Mark Ashton on drums, and Steve Gould on vocals and bass. They gained early success with their single "Sympathy," which reached the top of the charts in Italy and France and peaked at No. 27 in the UK. Signed to Charisma Records, they released their self-titled debut album in 1969, which, despite its innovative sound, did not achieve significant commercial success in the UK. Over the years, the band underwent several lineup changes and released albums such as "As Your Mind Flies By," "Epic Forest," "Somebody's Watching," and "Born Again," but ultimately disbanded in 1975.
Rare Bird's music was influenced by progressive and classical styles, particularly evident in their early work. Despite their promising start, the band struggled to maintain momentum due to various challenges, including poor management and a lack of strategic touring. Despite this, their early albums remain notable for their creative and distinctive sound, which continues to interest fans of progressive rock.
