Africa Express

Africa Express is a collaborative music project founded in 2006 by musician Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz) and a group of UK music industry figures with the goal of fostering cross-cultural musical exchange between African and Western artists. The project brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds—spanning electronic, pop, hip hop, rock, and traditional African genres—and encourages them to collaborate in studios, live performances, and recordings. Over the years, Africa Express has become known for its genre-defying approach and its live shows and recording sessions featuring artists such as Fatoumata Diawara, Tony Allen, Spoek Mathambo, Damon Albarn, Nick Zinner, Moonchild Sanelly, and many others.

Africa Express is perhaps best known for its albums and spontaneous musical events, like live train tours across the UK and pop-up concerts across Africa and Europe. Each release captures the spirit of improvisation and boundary-breaking experimentation. Their 2019 release EGOLI was recorded in Johannesburg and celebrated the city’s vibrant scene, featuring a mix of rising South African talent and international stars. With its rotating lineup and ever-evolving sound, Africa Express continues to push the boundaries of global music collaboration.
