The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious symphony orchestras, with a rich history that dates back to 1743. Based in Leipzig, Germany, the orchestra is known for its warm sound, deep connection to German Romantic repertoire, and its long-standing relationship with composers like Felix Mendelssohn, who once served as its music director. The name “Gewandhaus” comes from the cloth merchants’ hall (Gewandhaus) where it originally performed.
