Neon Neon is a collaborative project between Welsh artist Gruff Rhys, best known as the frontman of the psychedelic rock band Super Furry Animals, and American producer Boom Bip, real name Bryan Charles Hollon. The duo emerged onto the music scene with a distinctive blend of electronic music, pop sensibilities, and elaborate thematic concepts. Their debut album, "Stainless Style," released in 2008, was a critical success and received a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. The album stood out not only for its catchy synth-pop tracks but also for its unique concept—a musical interpretation of the tumultuous life of controversial automotive mogul John DeLorean.
Following the momentum of their debut, Neon Neon released "Praxis Makes Perfect" in 2013, another concept album that delved into the life of Italian publisher and left-wing activist Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. The project combined pop melodies with historical and political storytelling, reflecting the duo's ambition to weave narrative into their music. Together, they crafted a sound that was both accessible and intellectually engaging, using their platform to explore unconventional subject matters seldom addressed in pop music. Despite their distinctive sound and high-concept albums, Neon Neon has remained a relatively elusive presence in the music world, focusing on quality over quantity with sporadic releases like the "Years of Lead EP," and singles such as "I Lust You," "Raquel," and "Trick for Treat," further contributing to their enigmatic and cult-like status among fans of indie and electronic music.
