Jonathan Nott

Jonathan Nott is a renowned English conductor born in Solihull, England, in either 1962 or 1963. He studied music at Cambridge University, singing and flute at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and conducting in London. Nott began his career in the late 1980s and has held several prestigious positions, including Music Director of the Lucerne Theatre and principal conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2002. He is perhaps best known for his 16-year tenure as Chief Conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2016, during which he led numerous international tours and recorded several acclaimed albums, including Mahler's symphonies. Nott has also been Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra since 2014 and has led the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande since 2017. He is celebrated for his interpretations of Mahler and his commitment to contemporary music, having recorded the complete orchestral works of György Ligeti with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Nott's recent work includes conducting a wide range of orchestras, such as the Vienna, Berlin, New York, and Los Angeles Philharmonics. His dedication to nurturing young talent is evident through his involvement with the Young German Philharmonic and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. Nott's extensive discography showcases his versatility, with recordings of works by Schubert, Mahler, and Ligeti, among others. His contributions to the music world have been recognized with honors such as the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Golden Ring of Honor of the City of Bamberg.
