Chavez

Chavez is an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 1993. The band is known for their intricate guitar work and was part of the post-hardcore movement that developed in the East Coast underground music scene. The original lineup consisted of Matt Sweeney on guitar and vocals, Clay Tarver on guitar, Scott Marshall on bass, and James Lo on drums. Their sound is characterized by a deft combination of heavy and melodic, weaving complex guitar riffs with a driving rhythmic base and Sweeney's distinctive vocal delivery.

The band's debut album, "Gone Glimmering," was released in 1995 and quickly gained acclaim among indie and alternative rock fans for its fresh and innovative sound. They followed up with their sophomore effort, "Ride The Fader," in 1996, which built upon their debut's success and showcased the band's maturing songwriting and dynamic range. Despite their critical success and a dedicated fan base, Chavez never broke through to mainstream recognition. After a long hiatus, during which members focused on other projects, Chavez returned to the music scene with the EP "Cockfighters" in 2017, their first release in over two decades. The EP was warmly received as it signified the band's enduring presence and continued relevance in the indie rock landscape. "Better Days Will Haunt You" is another notable release, serving as a compilation album that collected the band's work, including non-album tracks and rarities, reaffirming their legacy to old fans and introducing their rich discography to new listeners. In 2020, Matador Records reissued "Gone Glimmering" with an expanded edition featuring bonus tracks, giving fans a chance to revisit the record that first solidified Chavez's place within the genre.
