Martin Rummel

Martin Rummel is an Austrian cellist known for his deep dive into classical and romantic repertoire, bringing fresh energy to both well-loved works and lesser-known gems. Born in Linz (1974) into a musical family – his father was conductor Franz Leopold-Moßburger – Rummel studied at Vienna’s prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts, honing a rich, expressive style. A recording enthusiast, he’s carved out a niche reviving overlooked 19th-century composers like David Popper and the Stiastny brothers, while also delivering acclaimed interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach.

Whether he’s partnering with pianists for sonatas or teaming up for quirky cello-and-bass duets (like those Bottesini pieces), Rummel’s projects balance scholarly curiosity with playful musicianship. His discography reads like a love letter to the cello’s versatility, spanning fiery Russian sonatas, introspective Bach suites, and everything in between. Fun fact: he occasionally plays a 1690 Giovanni Grancino cello – a vintage instrument that probably has stories to tell!
