ESP Ohio is a supergroup formed by lo-fi indie music stalwart Robert Pollard, the frontman of the highly influential band Guided by Voices. The project materialized in 2016 as a collaborative effort between Pollard and guitarist Nick Mitchell, who was at that time a member of Guided by Voices, along with bassist Mark Shue and drummer Travis Harrison, both of whom have also been part of the extended Guided by Voices family. The new group allowed Pollard to expand his seemingly inexhaustible creative output and work with musicians he respected and enjoyed playing with in a fresh collaborative setting.
Their debut album, "Starting Point of the Royal Cyclopean," was released in November 2016 through GBV Inc. and showcased a distinctive blend of the catchy, classic rock-infused pop melodies that Pollard is known for, alongside Mitchell's edgy guitar work. Tracks like "Royal Cyclopean" and "Lithuanian Bombshells" were highlights that exhibited the group's knack for precision amidst the chaos of high-energy rock. While ESP Ohio has been relatively quiet following their initial burst onto the scene, the music they presented provided fans and new listeners alike a dynamic addition to the ever-expanding universe of Pollard's prolific songwriting legacy.
