Great Big Sea

Great Big Sea was a Canadian folk-rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, known for their energetic blend of rock, pop, Irish, Scottish, and Maritime folk music with sometimes a hint of traditional sea shanties that celebrate their Canada's Atlantic heritage. Formed in 1993, the band comprised lead vocalist and guitarist Alan Doyle, multi-instrumentalists Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and, for many years, bassist Darrell Power, who departed the group in 2003 to be succeeded by Murray Foster. Great Big Sea's music reflects the vibrant culture of their native province, often featuring instruments like the bodhrán, fiddle, accordion, and whistle, complementing their powerful vocal harmonies.

Over the course of two decades, they carved a distinct niche in the Canadian music landscape, gaining a loyal following with their dynamic live performances and an extensive catalogue of songs that fuse traditional storytelling with a modern, accessible sound. With albums such as "Up" (1995), "Play" (1997), "Sea of No Cares" (2002), and "Fortune's Favour" (2008), Great Big Sea celebrated multiple gold and platinum certifications and received numerous accolades, including multiple East Coast Music Awards. Following their 20th-anniversary celebration and the release of the retrospective compilation "XX" in 2012, the band curtailed their activities, leaving behind a legacy of vibrant music that continues to resonate with fans of Canadian folk and a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry of Newfoundland and Labrador.
