Nēnēs

Nēnēs is a traditional Okinawan folk music group that formed in the early 1990s. The group was originally produced by Okinawan music legend Sadao China and is known for its rich vocal harmonies and faithful interpretations of Ryukyuan (Okinawan) folk songs. "Nēnēs" means "sisters" in the Okinawan language, and the group's lineup has featured various women over the years, each contributing their own voice to the preservation and celebration of Okinawan musical heritage.

Their music blends traditional instruments like the sanshin with more contemporary arrangements, creating a sound that's both rooted in history and accessible to modern audiences. Nēnēs played a significant role in bringing Okinawan music to a broader Japanese audience, and they've also gained recognition internationally. With albums like "GOLDEN☆BEST" and "コザ dabasa," the group continues to honor the deep cultural traditions of Okinawa while evolving stylistically over time.
