The Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band (OMSB) traces its roots back to the Imperial Japanese Army 4th Division Band, founded in 1888. After the military band's disbandment in 1923, its volunteer members formed the Osaka Music Band, which later became the Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band in 1946. The band operates under the direct management of Osaka city, and its members are city officials. Known for its rich tradition and contribution to Japanese wind music, OMSB has played an annual role since 1962 in recording the entrance march for the National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament. They have also been recognized with numerous awards, including the Osaka Cultural Festival Award and the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association Award, highlighting their lasting cultural impact in Osaka and beyond.
The band is celebrated for its diverse performances and recordings, such as contest reference music for the Japan Band Association and appearances on national TV programs. With a history spanning nearly a century, OMSB remains a vital cultural institution in Osaka, blending tradition with modern symphonic wind repertoire. Their commitment to excellence continues under the guidance of contemporary music directors and artistic advisors, maintaining their status as one of Japan’s foremost symphonic wind ensembles.
