ピチカート・ファイヴ (Pizzicato Five), often simply referred to as P5, was a pioneering and influential Japanese pop band known for their eclectic and vibrant style that defied traditional genre boundaries. Formed in Tokyo in 1985 by multi-instrumentalist Yasuharu Konishi and lead vocalist Mamiko Sasaki, along with several other members who would eventually leave the group, Pizzicato Five became iconic for their blend of styles ranging from retro-inspired pop and lounge music to bossa nova, jazz, and electronica, all infused with a whimsically cosmopolitan flair.
Over the years, Pizzicato Five saw changes in its lineup, with Maki Nomiya joining as the lead vocalist in 1991 and ultimately becoming the face of the band alongside Konishi. Their music was characterized by its sophistication, wit, and playful use of samples and programming, which made them a key part of the Shibuya-kei movement in Japan. Although they gained a cult following in Western countries, especially with the release of albums like "スウィート・ソウル・レヴュー" (Sweet Soul Revue), "ベリッシマ" (Bellissima), and "カップルズ" (Couples), they remained an emblem of Japanese pop culture during the 1990s. Pizzicato Five's innovative sound and visual aesthetic had a lasting impact on the international music scene before the group disbanded in 2001.
