Greg Murphy

Greg Murphy is a renowned jazz pianist and composer, born in Chicago, where he began his musical journey in 1971 with the Ray-Fisk Grammar School Band. He furthered his classical studies later that year with Lucia Santini at Roosevelt University. Murphy's career gained momentum in the 1980s, particularly after a jazz study grant allowed him to study with Ellis Marsalis in New Orleans. He played with notable figures like Donald Harrison and Wynton Marsalis before moving to New York in 1987, where he became closely associated with Rashied Ali, a legendary drummer known for his work with John Coltrane. Throughout his career, Murphy has performed extensively with his own trio and collaborated with artists such as Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, and Carlos Santana.
