Nelson Sargento

Nelson Sargento, born Nelson Mattos on July 25, 1924, was a cherished figure in the world of Brazilian samba, renowned for his talents as a singer, composer, and painter. A significant pillar of Brazilian music, Sargento's career reflected the rich history and evolution of samba through the 20th century into the new millennium. Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, he was deeply rooted in the samba tradition and was especially known for his association with the famed Mangueira samba school, a nexus for influential samba composers and performers.

Over the years, Nelson Sargento enhanced the samba genre with his soulful voice and poetic lyrics, contributing a significant number of classics to its canon. Among his later works, "Encanto da Paisagem" stands out as a testament to his enduring artistry, with a remastered version released in 2020 that brought a fresh sheen to his vibrant compositions. His album "Versátil" once again confirmed his ability to traverse multiple facets of samba, showcasing his flexibility as an artist. Sargento's affinity for the works of Cartola, another samba legend, was beautifully exhibited in "Só Cartola (Ao Vivo)," a live tribute to a revered peer and friend. Nelson Sargento's passing in 2021 marked the end of an era for samba, but his music and legacy continue to inspire generations of musicians and aficionados worldwide.
