Last Exit

Last Exit was an avant-garde jazz supergroup formed in 1986, known for its fervent and pioneering approach to free jazz. The band consisted of powerhouse musicians: guitarist Sonny Sharrock, saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, bass guitarist Bill Laswell, and drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson. Their music was characterized by a blend of intense improvisation, strong rock and funk influences, and an unrestrained approach to jazz that often veered into the realm of noise and chaos.

The ensemble released their self-titled debut album "Last Exit" in 1986, which marked the beginning of a short but impactful discography that pushed the boundaries of jazz music. They followed this with a series of releases that captured their dynamic live performances, including "Köln" (a live recording from their performance in Cologne, Germany), "Best of Live," and the gritty charm of "Cassette Recordings 87" and "From the Board: Cassette Records '87". Their 1988 album "Iron Path," offered a slightly more structured and produced sound, showcasing their ability to meld sonic extremity with moments of musical coherence. Despite their brief existence, Last Exit left an indelible mark on the world of free jazz and improvisational music, earning them a dedicated cult following and influencing a generation of musicians who dared to venture outside conventional genre boundaries.
