Mariss Jansons

Mariss Jansons was an illustrious Latvian conductor, born on January 14, 1943, in Riga, and recognized as a leading interpreter of the classical and romantic repertoire. The son of the renowned conductor Arvīds Jansons, Mariss Jansons followed in his father's footsteps, meticulously honing his craft and eventually becoming one of the most respected conductors of his time. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and later under the legendary maestro Hans Swarowsky in Vienna and in Salzburg with Herbert von Karajan.

Throughout a distinguished career, Jansons held prestigious positions, including music director roles with the Oslo Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, among others. He was also closely associated with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. His interpretations were deeply emotional and technically precise, marked by clarity and a profound understanding of the composer’s intentions. His discography includes an extensive range of classic works by composers such as Mahler, Bruckner, Sibelius, and Richard Strauss, showing his deep commitment to rehearsing and achieving the true essence of each piece as evident in many of his releases devoted to rehearsal excerpts. Mariss Jansons' passionate music-making and exceptional leadership made him a beloved figure by orchestras and audiences worldwide until his passing on December 1, 2019. His influence continues through the countless recordings and performances that showcase his indelible mark on the world of classical music.
