Tonus Peregrinus

Tonus Peregrinus is a vocal ensemble that has garnered international acclaim for its exceptional performances and recording of both early and contemporary choral music. Founded in 1990 by the British composer Antony Pitts, the ensemble is named after an ancient plainsong tone — the ninth tone, or tonus peregrinus, which means "wandering tone". Their work is particularly renowned for its purity of tone and deep musical insight, attributes that have established them as a leading force in interpreting the rich tapestry of sacred and secular choral works.

The ensemble has an extensive discography, characterized by a dedication to exploring the roots of the Western choral tradition as well as embracing the works of modern composers. Outstanding releases include the critically lauded "Music from The Eton Choirbook," which revived masterpieces from the early English Renaissance, and "Adam De La Halle: Jeu De Robin Et De Marion (Le)," which showcased their versatility in rendering medieval dramatic works. Their recordings such as "Leonin / Perotin: Sacred Music From Notre-Dame Cathedral" highlight their expertise in polyphonic music from the 12th and 13th centuries, while their interpretation of Arvo Pärt's "Passio" marks a significant contribution to the performance of contemporary sacred music, exhibiting the group's ability to create immersive and reflective experiences for their audiences. With their innovative programming and scholarly approach, Tonus Peregrinus continues to captivate listeners and broaden the appreciation for choral music across ages.
