Paul Tortelier

Paul Tortelier was a French cello virtuoso and composer whose rich musicality and technical brilliance made him one of the 20th century’s most celebrated cellists. Born in Paris in 1914, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire and skyrocketed to fame after joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Serge Koussevitzky in 1937. Known for his fiery, passionate performances, Tortelier became a sought-after soloist, collaborating with legends like conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and pianist Yehudi Menuhin. His interpretations of Bach’s cello suites, Beethoven’s sonatas, and concertos by Elgar and Dvořák remain landmarks in classical music.

Beyond the stage, Tortelier was a dedicated teacher, mentoring students at the Paris Conservatoire and the Menuhin School. He even composed his own works, including a cello concerto and the *"Jewish Poem"* for cello and orchestra, reflecting his deep connection to his heritage. With his trademark tilted cello posture and lively personality, he became a beloved figure on TV and in documentaries. Tortelier’s legacy lives on through his recordings—like his iconic Bach suites and collaborations on Brahms and Beethoven—and through his musical family, including his daughter, pianist Maria de la Pau. He passed away in 1990, leaving a vibrant imprint on the cello world.
