Los Pregoneros del Puerto is a vibrant group that brings the heart and soul of traditional Mexican jarocho music to life. Hailing from the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, the band is led by José Gutiérrez, who sings and plays the jarana, with longtime collaborators Gonzalo Mata, Manuel Vásquez, and guitarist Valente Reyes regularly joining the lineup—all of them native Veracruzanos. These musicians originally played together as young men in the early 1960s, took some time apart, and then reunited in 1982. Their music celebrates the rich cultural traditions of Veracruz, and José Gutiérrez, raised in a family of ranchers and musicians, is known as the group’s pregonero, or “caller,” guiding the band’s sound with his distinctive voice and leadership.
Over the years, Los Pregoneros del Puerto have dedicated themselves to preserving and sharing the lively rhythms of son jarocho, capturing both local and international audiences with their authenticity and passion. One of their most notable releases, “Music Of Veracruz: The Sones Jarochos of Los Pregoneros del Puerto” (1985), showcases their commitment to tradition and has become a touchstone for fans of Mexican folk music. The group continues to be a celebrated voice of Veracruz through their performances and recordings.
