General Magic
**General Magic** is a cult-favorite German experimental electronic duo rooted in Cologne's vibrant underground scene. Active since the early '90s, the project initially revolved around Andi Toma (later of Mouse on Mars fame) and Markus Schmickler, blending improvisational chaos with glitchy synths, found sounds, and a playful disregard for genre boundaries. Their work—like the hypnotic *Frantz* (revisited in a 2021 remaster) or the jittery *Rechenkönig*—feels like eavesdropping on a malfunctioning robot orchestra, equal parts cerebral and mischievous. Known for raw live performances (see *Live @ Next Music Festival 2005*), they’ve left a cryptic trail of releases that nod to jazz-inspired "bop" experiments (*Softbop*, *Livebop*) and
