Black Messiah is a German Viking / Pagan metal band that has carved a niche for itself with its distinct sound and thematic focus on Norse mythology, legends, and historical narratives. The band was formed in 1992 by their frontman Zagan (Christof im Brahm) in Gelsenkirchen. Known for Zagan's prevailing black metal vocal style blended with clean choruses, the use of traditional folk instruments, and the epic atmosphere their music conjures, Black Messiah has successfully brought ancient tales to life, much to the delight of metal and mythology enthusiasts alike.
Over the years, Black Messiah has demonstrated a consistent evolution in their music, incorporating symphonic elements and developing complex song structures. Their album "Of Myths and Legends" released in 2006, established a stronger footing in the Viking metal scene with tracks carrying powerful melodies and mythological narratives. Following this, the band released "First War of the World" in 2009, which was a concept album that tells the story of the first war ever to occur in the world according to Norse mythology. It received a positive response for its ambitious storytelling and engaging arrangements. Continuing their odyssey through the realms of Norse sagas and Germanic folklore, Black Messiah delivered "The Final Journey" in 2012, which showcased a harmonious blend of aggressive riffs and melodic folk passages. Their most recent piece, "Heimweh" (2013), translates to "homesickness" in English and delves into the longing for home, a recurring motif in epic tales and human experience, presenting it through a mixture of melancholic tunes and epic choruses that have come to define Black Messiah's distinctive sound.
