Pavel Kogan is a renowned Russian violinist and conductor, born on June 6, 1952, in Moscow. He comes from a distinguished musical family; his parents are violinists Leonid Kogan and Elizaveta Gilels, and his uncle is the pianist Emil Gilels. Kogan's artistic journey began early, studying both violin and conducting simultaneously, a rare privilege in the Soviet Union. In 1970, at just 18, he won first prize in the Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki, which led to extensive international performances as a violinist. However, he eventually focused more on conducting, making his debut with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra in 1972.
As a conductor, Pavel Kogan has had a storied career. He was the chief conductor of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 2022, transforming it into one of Russia's most recognized orchestras. He has also conducted numerous prominent orchestras worldwide, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Kogan has recorded extensively with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles, earning critical acclaim for his interpretations, particularly his Rachmaninoff cycle. He has received several prestigious awards, including the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the title "People's Artist of Russia." In 2022, Kogan left Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
