Rafael Cortijo

Rafael Cortijo was a pioneering Puerto Rican percussionist, bandleader, and composer who played a major role in popularizing Afro-Caribbean music during the mid-20th century. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Cortijo is best known for blending traditional Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms like bomba and plena with modern dance-band formats, helping to bring this folkloric music into wider popularity. His band, Cortijo y su Combo, often featured legendary singer Ismael Rivera and was known for its infectious grooves and tight arrangements.

Throughout the 1950s and early '60s, Cortijo y su Combo became one of the most influential groups in Latin music, breaking barriers by touring internationally and appearing on mainstream media. Cortijo's innovative use of congas, timbales, and other percussion instruments laid the foundation for future generations of salsa and Latin jazz musicians. His contributions have left a lasting legacy in the world of Latin music, both in Puerto Rico and beyond.
