Gary Smulyan is a renowned American jazz baritone saxophonist, composer, and educator. Born in 1956, he began playing the saxophone at age 12 and quickly developed a passion for jazz. Smulyan has performed and recorded with a wide range of jazz greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Big Band. He is known for his virtuosic technique, soulful playing, and deep understanding of the jazz tradition. Smulyan has released numerous critically acclaimed albums as a leader and has also written several books on jazz improvisation. He is a respected educator and has taught at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
