Květa Novotná was a Czech mezzo-soprano who enjoyed a successful career in opera and concert. Born in Prague in 1920, she studied at the Prague Conservatory and made her debut in 1941. She quickly gained recognition for her beautiful voice and her dramatic intensity, and soon became one of the leading mezzo-sopranos in Europe. Novotná made her American debut in 1949, and went on to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and other major opera houses around the world. She was particularly admired for her performances in Verdi and Wagner operas, and was also a noted interpreter of Czech composers such as Smetana and Dvořák. Novotná retired from singing in 1975, and died in Prague in 2012.
