Under Exile is a five-piece metal band formed in 2015 by a group of teenagers from the Dine'/Navajo Tribe on the Navajo Nation and Shiprock, New Mexico. The band consists of Ryland Benally on guitar, Rumeel Jim on guitar, Wyatt Billie on drums, Franklin Yazzie on vocals, and Trevor Martin on bass, who joined as a full-time member in 2023. They are proud to be part of the growing Native American heavy music scene and aim to represent the Dinè/Navajo Nation through their work. Under Exile has opened for notable bands like Fear Factory and In Flames, and has performed at several festivals, including the Navajo Nation Metal Fest. Their music often features a modern metalcore sound, as seen in their recent release "Meira," which explores themes of existential nihilism and the impermanence of human existence. Under Exile creates music that resonates with both their cultural heritage and contemporary metal enthusiasts.
Notable releases from Under Exile include their concept album "Make Your Peace with It" from 2017 and more recent singles like "Meira," "The Lament," and "Throne of Ashes." The band continues to grow and contribute to the recognition of Native American talent in the metal music scene. Their work has been praised for its powerful sound and meaningful lyrics, positioning them as a rising force in the metal genre.
