José Luis Turina

José Luis Turina is a renowned Spanish composer, born on October 12, 1952, in Madrid. He is the grandson of the celebrated composer Joaquín Turina. Turina studied composition under prominent mentors such as Antón García Abril, Román Alís, Rodolfo Halffter, and Carmelo Bernaola at the conservatories of Barcelona and Madrid. He furthered his studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he learned from Franco Donatoni. His career is marked by significant achievements, including winning the First Prize at the International Composition Contest in Valencia in 1981 with *Meeting Point* and the First Prize of the Musical Composition Contest “Queen Sofía” in 1986 with *Ocnos*. He was awarded the Premio Nacional de Música for composition in 1996.

Turina is also a dedicated educator, having taught harmony in the Conservatories of Cuenca and Madrid since 1981 and serving as the artistic director of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra from 2001 to 2020. His compositional style blends traditional heritage with modern techniques, as seen in works like *Concierto para violín y orquesta* and *Fantasía sobre una Fantasía de Alonso Mudarra*. His recent releases include *Tríos Con Piano*, *La forma de la huella*, and *Exequias, in Memoriam Fernando Zóbel & Concierto para Violin y Orquesta* .
