The Butchies were an influential punk rock trio from Durham, North Carolina, leaving an indelible mark on the late '90s and early 2000s queercore and feminist punk movements. Formed in 1998 by lead vocalist/guitarist Kaia Wilson, formerly of the punk band Team Dresch, the band also included drummer Melissa York, and bassist Alison Martlew. They quickly became known for their raw, passionate sound and lyrics that tackled issues of sexuality, feminism, and social justice, resonating with many fans within and beyond LGBTQ+ communities.
Their discography includes a number of impactful releases that contributed to their status as icons within their genre. "Are We Not Femme?" (1998) was their powerful debut, followed by "Population 1975" (1999), which continued to assert their punk credentials while exploring more complex musical landscapes. Their third album, "3" (2001), showcased a maturation in songwriting and musical prowess, while their final album, "Make Yr Life" (2004), saw the band perfecting their blend of melody and message, solidifying their legacy before their eventual disbandment. Through their tenure, The Butchies garnered a loyal fanbase and influenced a generation of musicians with their empowering and unapologetically political approach to music.
